03SuperSport
Hey everyone,

I just bought myself a 2003 Super Sport (upgrading from a 1993 Indy sport), I was just wondering if any of you guys know much about it's capabilities, gas mileage, and so on. My uncles are pretty sure it'll run with 500 liquids, and I expect it to get pretty good gas mileage (for a sled). I'm not too woried about it not hitting 100 mph or anything, most of my riding is done on rivers, trails and ditches. I'm just hopping the Edge suspension can hold up to some fairly big air. Oh, also, anyone know if it can lift the skis, if so how high?

Thanks
Darkstar
It will be a great sled for the kind of riding you do. It will keep up with the liquids till about 80. You will love the edge supsension, it can take a serious pounding. Without some gearing, clutching and suspension changes it wont be pulling the skis up. You will love the sled especially since you dont expect it to be a speed demon. Have fun and enjoy the serious upgrade you just made from your old sled.

my dad has an '03 super sport. he loves it. it tops off at around i believe he said 90-93 with nothing left, but after that hes watching everyone elses tailights. fun sled though
Sno-Mo-Nut
I also know someone who has a 03. This thing rocks on twisty trails. Light so you can really throw it around. I put about 80 miles on his last year, the only problem I've seen is when riding with higher displacement sleds is the fuel mileage, When everyone was cranking at 60-65 on wide open trails, the sled just drank the fuel trying to keep pace. They must have been right in their power band, and the 550 was over it.
But, I would definitely buy one in a heartbeat. Nice ride, nice power and comfortable seating.

The ride quality is what you will notice most. The edge chassis offers a very good ride and handling. As far as hanging with a liquid 500, depends on the model. You should be able to hang with a 500 indy for a while, but if you tangle with a ves 500, it'll be lights out for you. You have a great sled that has good power and light weight. It'll be awesome in the trails. A friend of mine has two '01 500 ss......He loves 'em!
rowley01
Those SS go really nice, The 550 is a great motor, You can drag with them too cuz of the fan. I like that. As far as staying with a 500 liquid, You can prolly stay with a 488 liquid for a while till like...75 or so..But a liberty 500 VES or not. Will stay ahead of you. But dont get me wrong..Those 550`s are pretty quick. Some clutch work, And they will surprise you. And look sweet and handle great too..You will love it for what you are doing. The only thing that keeps me from getting one a while back over my xc 500..Is that they didn thave plastic ski`s at the time, And they dont have many up grades. as far as cans or a pipe or something. They will lift ski`s if you adjust the suspention, Any sled will. My Puma 340 will if i adjust it. But why would you wanna lift ski`s anyways, Handeling is what you want man..
snowfox
my bro also has a 340 puma lol

All I've heard was good things about the Super Sport, if I had the money that would be the first sled I would buy.

Hello,

I have an 03 Super Sport, It's a great dependable sled! I can only get the sled to top out a 72 mph. i have driven an 04 500 xcsp many times and find it tops out at 85-90mph (that is fast for me so I try not to look down too much!) I love the weight of the 550 it's a lot easier for me to handle (being a girl and all), However my 550 seems to flood quite easy. I never know whether to choke, 1/2 choke or no choke. I usually end up flooding when it's slightly warm but not cold. The guys have to pull their guts out trying to start it (oops)! Anyway, great choice with the 550, I have a few upgrades on mine. Plastic skis, hyfax for studding (96 studs) colored bumper and mirrors. Happy Sledding!!! Let it SNOW!!!!
crdude
you should like the 550, its light, and has enough power for some one that dosnt plan on doing X/C races (hair scrambles poker runs ect.)

hey its nice seeing a girl that rides, a polaris luckly tongue.gif

for your choke 1/2 choke or no choke problem., if its the first time starting the sled that day or if the engine is cold, full choke tell it starts let it sit for 5-10 seconds switch it to half tell its idles down then no choke, if it tries to die fether the throttle some or put 1/2 choke on again.

I hope You don't mind me replying to an old one but I just found the forum. I own a 01 supersport and I have owned it since it was new. Mine would not break 70 mph and I talked to several people from polaris and they said that was all it was going to do, It was set up for rentals. They said there was nothing I could do. They're wrong. First of all the jetting was all wrong, my father and I used to build racing sleds so we know how to tinker. My sled came with 300 mains and a 35 pilot, I dropped that down to a 270 and a 260 and raised the pilot to 40. I see the newer supersports come just slightly bigger on the mains. also I put slightly heavier weights in the clutch and a stiffer spring. Now she runs like a raped ape. Also you were wondering about lifting the skis. There are two blocks on the skid frame that the suspension bottom out against, they are eccentric, They are inside right in front of the rear idler, all edge chassis have them, if you set the back one for maximum travel it will lift the skis off the ground. I have both mine set for maximum travel, and I love it. On hard snow like in a parking lot mine will lift the skis for about 150 feet or so unless you let off the throttle. I run with 600's and 700's and there is not one of them that can beat me off the line. If you set it up like mine, it would keep up with the 500 liquid, the 600's come around me on the top end, but not very hard. Hope this is helpful, If you have any questions, you can e-mail me.

Great sled, it will run with a 488 liquid. And you can always adjust the suspention to lift the skies. Great sled for trails and a but of ditch banging. The edge will take pretty much anything pretty well. good luck

I have a 96 488 fan its an indy trail and i can get that up to 82-85 I dont see why you guys are having so much trouble getting the supersports to go at least that, i would think they would be near 90 for a top speed which is plenty fast

My son got an 06' supersport and he is in heaven. He used to ride an OLD 400.

what weights and springs did you put in, I just bought a 2001 super sport and I would like to do some clutch work.
yamaman1990
Hi, i have an 05 supersport 550, love the sled, but also tops out at 71ish, from what i understand, polaris had the cdi set for the max rpm, id like to say 7700 ish or something like that, because they offered a 3 year engine warrenty on these, so they did that so it would less likely to pop the engine in these. mine has the m-10 in it also.
super sportster
I've got a 99 supersport 550 and it will go around 83 topped out on a straightaway. Its got decent power and will stay with 500 liquids on the trails. My friend has a 2000 indy 500 and we were neck and neck until the top end and then he will start to pull away from me.
Phat440
My dads got the 99' polaris 550ss and its a great ride. Verry easy to control. As for me im stuck with my 03 pro-x 440 (which isnt running right now) but i think im gonna sell it because its more for snowcross and pulling wheelies, so i think im gonna look out for a super sport to purchase.
justme23005
I had an 05 550 Supersport... It topped out at 82 mph.. Very nice sled..

The fans suck fuel! I have a 2006 Trail Touring DLX with the 550. Mains were dropped to 260/270 from the the stock 270/280. Re geared to 21/41 from 19/41 (If I remeber correctly) Opened up the fan outlet on the hood. Run the track as loose as I can without racheting. Slippery slides. It gets about 8 mpg US most days. Exceptionally cold on hardpack and it'll kick up to 9 or 10 mpg. Doesn't matter if I'm on it beating the snot out of it or the the GF's on it just cruising.

With the short track and less weight you should be in the 9 to 10 mpg range. Install a tach if you don't have one (My touring didn't) You should be holding 7000 rpm give or take a 100 or 2 at WOT. New belt, proper deflection (1.25" I think) Engine torque stop snubbed up tight. Track as loose as you can and properly aligned. Skis aligned. If the clutch's haven't been touched, have them freshened up with new springs. Carbs synched. Good luck!
