The axle has a snap ring in a groove located on axle spline inside the cv joint. When we do ours the son-in-law puts axle in vise and has to pry or tap on the joint to get it apart. When you have it apart, you want to put on boot before you reassemble the axle. It will pop snap ring into place when axle is all the way into joint. The boot requires a special tool to clamp the bands. Pack the boot and joint with some grease before you assemble. plowking

If you fall the service manual it shows you how to do it my uncle did it on his 700efi also don't get th stock boot there made of really crappy hard rubber go for the cv lightning boot its more forgivable for when you riding in the winter and when your mudding it up....

Hi: I have to replace my inner boot on my 2002 Sportsman 700. I noticed some clicking noise after I had her in some water. May have gotten into the cv joint. Does anyone know if the clicking noise is normal, or from the torn boot etc. I pulled off tire the other day. Took left and right bolt out of a joint, and could not get farther. Can anyone let me know if there is a pin/sleeve that I have to pull out after left and right a arm bolts are removed. Thanks Mountain Joe.

if it is clicking dont waste you money on a boot. you will need to replace the end that is damaged.if you buy a stock end sometimes it makes more sence to repace the whole axle for another 30 or 40 bucks.

I'm with Drake. You can maybe repack the joint but it is only going to last so long. Do it right and just replace the whole axle. It's not worth screwing around with again next year just to save 30 bucks.
