Full Version: '91 RXL Help again...

Hey guys. I've been runnin my '91 RXL all winter with absolutely no problems...it ran perfect. I was riding it one day and it was still running fine, parked it at my grandma's for a couple hours, went back out and the sled wouldn't idle very well so I had to stand next to it and keep giving it throttle. I thought no big deal, probably just low on gas. I rode it home (it's only about 4 blocks) and it wouldn't idle when I stopped so I had to keep giving it throttle, and when I got home and pulled into the yard to shut it off, it died before I could even turn the key to the off position. I was still thinking it was almost out of gas. The next day, I went and filled a 5 gallon tank and brought it home, put it all in the sled. I started it up, still the same thing. The fuel pump cycles just fine, battery is fine. No codes on the EFI. Any ideas? I'll probably be getting it in the garage next week. I have a feeling it might be the fuel line is twisted, like I ran into at the beginning of the year prep-work. Is that what you think it is too? Oh yeah, brand new plugs too. Thanks.

This forum is dead. I went out and got the airbox off, checked the fuel lines and they were fine. Anybody know what it could be? Still no codes on the EFI.

Is the idle the only problem, does it run okay at high RPM?

Sorry I dont get on here much .....

Check the fuel line inside the fuel tank as they have been known to rot and even sometimes fall off and end up in the bottom of the tank. See if you can fish it out the filler with a coathanger and check it. If the line falls off the fuel pump will run there will be no codes but the engine will not go because it will be sucking air

I'll ask my Father when I go into the shop tomorrow, he still has his 1990 RXL and had three others after that one. Maybe he can help ya out, good luck.

Im sure you already checked the plugs, maybe running too hot of plug for the milder weather, could be fouling??? A thought...

Sorry I got impatient guys. I asked on another forum and they said check the compression and fuel pressure. The compression is as far as I had to go. The mag side cylinder didn't even move the needle on the compression tester. My grandpa held his thumb over the spark plug hole while I pulled it over just to make sure and there was hardly any compression there at all. The compression from PTO to mag was 90, 95, 0 in that order. I'm gonna save up the money and rebuild all 3 this summer. What should the compression be? I figured around 120 based on what guys say on craigslist with triples that they did a compression test and around 120 is the most common people said. Is this right?

120 is good, anything lower than 100 I'd think you're having some leakdown problems. sounds like a good idea to rebuild all three.

That's what we thought too. Around September is when I'll start tearing into it. I'm going to try and have my uncle help me port it and if we can then I can polish it myself also. I am taking machine tool next year so I'm sure I will have access to a surface grinder so I can shave the heads also to bump up the compression. I was thinking of maybe trying to also bore it? What do you guys think of this?

Great to see you research all this at your age. I owned a 93 RXL fuel injected and went very good. The old boy that I took it to to get service work done on it had one that he shaved 20 thou on the heads and bored it out 20thou as well. He polished the exhaust ports to baby ass smooth and seen pics of it with the ski's 4ft in the air. He said it woke it right up. Good luck let all know what you did and how you made out.

That's about what I have read also about the shaving the heads and port/polishing. My track isn't that great and it spins enough as it is now so studs will definitely be a necessity. A clutch kit will also be added in. Is it hard to remove the primary clutch? I've never done it before since our 3 sleds are our first sleds for each one of us. None of this will happen until probably September but I'm just trying to gather as much info as possible.

Sorry to be the one to curb your enthusiasm but I thought I should put my two cents in here. The RXL is a very poor candidate for these kind of modifications. Once you start changing things related to the engine such as porting or compression.
the fuel requirements of the engine change and unfortunately the EFI system on this sled is not calibrated to adapt to the new needs of the engine. You will end up running lean and burning pistons......

Many people were frustrated after doing these kind of mods to their RXL only to find they now had a sled which was no longer reliable. And of course once you do these things you can't go back unless you start replacing heads and cylinders and so forth with stock units. This is one of the reason this model sled ended up with a bad reputation for unexplained repeat seizures and burndowns.

Back in the day when people added pipes to this sled the the pipes were sold with a matching rom chip which was burned with the new fuel map. The new chip would modify the fuel amount delivered under all conditions since the pipes would change the fuel needs of the engine. The chip was programmed after considerable R&D was done on a dyno to determine the fuel parameters.

There are a few guys that can burn these chips but as I said really you need a dyno to determine the needs of the modified engine under various loads and at different RPM's.

If you want to do this I think you should find a carb sled to do it with and leave the RXL stock. It is a lot easier and cheaper to experiment with carb jets than EFI.
