Full Version: Engine turning only 270 degrees - Crank/Bearings?

Hello all,
Just trying to get some feedback to see if anyone else has had this problem. I am trying to diagnose/fix a problem for my pastor on his '98 700 RMK. The engine will only turn about 270 degrees in either direction then stops hard. Sometime when turning it by hand sometimes I can feel it grinding or kind of snag in a spot then I can work its way past until it stops again at the same spots. Pistons are moving so it is not a broken con-rod. I am thinking that the bearings are shot as they are rollers on the rods and ball on the ends. I have not completely torn it down as of yet but thinking that is the next step.

Any thoughts or experience with a similar problem? He asked me to look at it as I have quite a bit of experience with motorcycles and snowmobiles, though it is almost all Yamaha sleds. It is just that I have not seen one do this before. Usually if the bearings go it is fairly apparent.

Thanks for any info. If you have any further questions I would try to provide more info.

Thanks
Craw
Pull the head off and you'll probably find the problem. Good Luck

Did not really want to have to pull the jugs. Just being lazy I guess but did remove the head and cylinders. Found the skirt broken off of the mag side piston with parts floating around in the bottom. Nice. Well, will have to pass on the bad news to the pastor and figure a ballpark $$ to fix it. Any recommendations for parts suppliers? I know of quite a few but just wanted to know anyone else's opinion. Thanks.
