Bike serviced Feb 2008. Since have not ridden the bike. A few months ago I ran the bike to use a 12v compressor to pump the tires, no problems. A few weeks ago tried again but the battery was dead. Charged the battery for 24 hrs and tried again. Now when I turn the key on the fuel pump does not start up, all I hear is a soft click, not the usual definte hum of the fuel pump pressurising. The enigine cranks over smartly but will not start up. I put a meter on the battery, 11.7v at the terminals. I even put a jump starter pack on the battery terminals but still no fuel pump start? Any help would be appreciated. I am 300 kms from the nearest bike shop.

The battery voltage should be higher than that so that might be the place to start. Judging by your description of the soft click it might be worth checking to see that the fuel pump relay (if there is one) is still good. 11.7 volts should be plenty to trip that relay.

I put the battery on charge again, result 12.9v at the terminals. Same result turning the key to on, just a soft click, which appears to be coming from the black box (?) in front of the dash pod. All wiring appears to be normal.

How small is that black box? About the size of a plastic bottle cap?

It's the biggest one (a few inches square) between the dash pod and front cargo bay. Anyway, took the bike to the local auto mechanic yesterday. Went back today, bike is in bits, he says the fuel pump is stuffed. He rang the state Polaris dealer (in my presence) who qouted $1000 AUD for a new tank/fuel pump! A new one from the US is about $400 USD plus shipping (bugger all difference between US/AU dollars these days) so you can see the dealer here is concentrating on retiring early in life! Since I got up from the floor I have been looking on the net. Appears other victims have used a 89-92 Hyundai Sonata fuel pump, supplied by Napa or Airtex, at less than $100 USD which sounds a lot better to me.

Good news from the auto shop. He was able to source a fuel pump only from a australian supplier for $150 AUD, as yet I don't know the details of the pump. Before he did so he provided the supplier with digital photos and dimensions of the polaris pump so hopefully the new one should do the job.

She is alive again! Has a new Saab fuel pump fitted. Goes as good as it used to. In case it happens again, I ordered a 89-92 Hyundai Sonata fuel pump, part number AFE8198, @ $89USD and a fuel screen @ $8 USD from carstuff.com.
