Full Version: Problem with speedo key '02 XC 600 SP

I have a 2002 XC 600 SP. The speedo doesn't work, and the cable isn't broken. I removed the right angle bracket that also holds the driveshaft bearing in place (This bracket/part is what the speedo cable screws into).

I noticed that the speedo key (which loks like a small section of square speedo cable) appears to have been twisted off at one end. One end of this key is square shaped, and the other looks twisted.

Here's the problem: I cannot see and broken off part of the key sticking out of the end of the driveshaft, and the key (even the good end) doesn't seem to fit into the round-looking hole in the end of the driveshaft.

I looked in my Polaris service manual for an exploded diagram of the driveshaft, but there isn't one. Does the speedo key fit directly into the end of the driveshaft, or is there an insert of some sort that fits into the end of the driveshaft?

I would like to replace the speedo key so my speedo will work, but not if it requires me to pull the driveshaft, as I don't want to pull my chaincase apart to remove the driveshaft.

Does this make sense?

Put another way, is the hole that the speedo ket fits into in the driveshaft part of the driveshaft itself, or is there a removeable keway of some sort.

Thanks!

Heres a link to a parts manual for an 02 600.......check the "drivetrain" section for an exploded view of the parts. It's a square key that fits into the shaft......really simple straight forward stuff. Good luck!

There is a brass insert which goes into the driveshaft which holds the braided square speedo key. They're about $7.00 at any polaris dealer. They break often. They're usually pretty easy to get out. Get a real good pair of pointed tip tweezers or even a sewing needle and poke around in the center of the shaft where the key goes into. You can usually pick the broken piece out that way.

usually when those brake its a sign you should replace the drive shaft bearings... just what i'v heard.
