Full Version: 2008 IQ 600 race sled motor blowing up in testing!

I got a call today with some HP numbers from a sled motor guy that works with the race department at Polaris. He said he got 137 HP on the dyno. blink.gif It's been cold enough that they started testing the new sled on a track, and they were blowing the motors up. He said to run 100 octane and don't hold it open for long periods. The manual says to run the timing box at "G", I think they were running the timing box at "D" for a closed course. That is quite a bit different than the "G" setting timing wise. Still, two sleds were tested last year for 400 laps without one part breaking(motor included). I will get more information very soon.

2008 Race Tip # 4 – 2008 600 IQ Race Sled Timing Selector Switch.
The timing selector switch is set in the “G” position from the factory. For closed course racing the timing
selector switch should be set in the “D” position.

Big X, first off... the sleds that were tested for "400 laps" had the old 600 engine, correct?

second, i aaalmost believe that 137.... strung out, i could see it but in trail form tuned to last 5000+ miles i would bet closer to 128 hp. ..... and thats no slouch! i think that is awesome power!!

third; how are these engines..... ( i say enginge (( combustion )) not motor (( electric )) smile.gif anyhue....
cond
what is the cause of the failyre? bottom, top? .... are you suggesting a compression issue? haha... that has been a big rumor topic! ..... ( some doo's now coming with replacement pistons and a letter saying not to run the engine till they are replaced.... they claim the piston was to "tight" but it seems to me they were pushing the compression to high for the pump gas class..... sounds like polaris is in the same boat ey? you mention higher than recommended octane and also mention the timing selecter... hrmmm sounds to me like they are fighting denotation.. smile.gif you said in an earlier poat 91 octane.... well rumor has it it will take 97 to make it last!.. ity will run on 91 but longevity and reliability will suffer...

you plan on ditch bangin it and freeridin huh? well bill bune industries in anoka mn will take care any compression issues very easily! $50 a side to recut the dome... you don't want to be dependednt on race fuel with a backcountry sled!!

i'll throw you a call tomorrow ( sat ) and see how you are doing with that update list you have, maybe swing over... later

Mouth,
I'm not sure about the engine in the test sled (new or old syle). I am sure they were running it at long pulls when they blew. The top ends are siezing, so I would say it's a compression issue, yes. To get the 137 HP range I would bet that it was "strung out", but that is the info I'm going to find out (timing selector postion, octane, jets, and so on). I will end up (taking your advice) eventally cutting the heads on the "engine". wink.gif

did you see results from the races? boy doo has there work cut out ey? man... throttles breaking, brakes catching on fire, tracks ( the new 1 ply) delaminating...... what a showing for the new xp.... i have been reading about the new 600 from pol. seems to be a great engine! fat tourqe band, with the low intake and a revised exhaust port... sounds great ( not peaky and hard to clutch)
