i need a water pump assy for a 96 ultra 680 please.
A water pump assembly from any 1996 Ultra OR, from a 96 600 XCR SP will work. The 96 sleds had the water pump drive gear running in an oil bath. If you look at the water pump diagram in the parts book, you will see a fill plug and washer on the gear drive cover, and a glass disc which was the sight gauge. 0W40 ATV oil was used in this gear case.
The water pump assembly from the 97up Ultra or any 97up reed valve triple (Ultra SPX, 600 XCR, 700 XCR, 800 XCR) have a different cover on the water pump assembly because they had no oil bath, and a different crank and crank seal arrangement that let crankcase spray lubricate the gear, same way that the main bearings are lubricated. If you put the gear cover from your old 96 waterpump onto a 97up waterpump, it would probably work for you as well.
