Oh yeah, I have a 1991 RXL. I bought it for $380 from a guy in the UP. I'm doing a build cause the guy was an idiot and f-ed it up bad, like he put a .010" over piston in a .020 over cylinder. Oh well, I know what I'm going to have now.

ok sled when running right, fast across the lake. Buy a battery every year and empty your wallet when things start going wrong. Had my 92 at Nelson`s Speed Shop at least twice and they could never get it right(100 bucks each time). Filters, fuel pump, all very expensive. I'll take carbs anyday. You asked

I bought my RXL for $600 (canadian) with a blown motor. I'm in the process of rebuilting it casue the middle piston blew. I'm also thinking about re-doing the crank seals? should I or not do them? It is the original crank and seals in there blink.gif

I would replace the crank seals. The pto seal is the one that gives most of the problems. That one got replaced every two years on my 92.

RXL 650, do you like your sled. I just bought a 95 as well. It looked to be a great sled but I am fouling plugs constantly and have heard some bad things about the motor and the efi on the RXL.

Yes, I have replaced them all twice now and have only put maybe 10 miles on the sled. I thought maybe it was old gas so i went and got some 92 octane and some fuel injector cleaner and they still fouled. I replaced two with brand new but was out of new ones and replaced the other with one that was not fouled but used and it would foul that older plug immediately.

When I first bought mine about 5 years ago I was running NGK BR9ES's plugs and would foul them, but then I switched to Champion RN2C's and I can't remember fouling a plug again.

Give it a try and let me know....

Thanks RXL, will do. How long did you have your sled? I have been reading up on the RXL and have not found many people saying anything good about them. I'm a little nervous about that.

Had mine for 5 years and had no major problems. We ride fairly aggressively and the sled has always performed very well. I did replace the battery the first year I got it and when I sold it this year was still running the same battery - just make sure to put it on the charger before summer storage. It always started at the end of the second pull even when 40 below outside, cornered extremely flat never lifting the inside ski, definetly a tad on the heavy side and not that great in the really deep snow but great on the trails and out on the lake.

I did have to rebuild the primary clutch about 2 years ago but other than that no complaints. I know some people had trouble with the earlier RXL's but haven't really read too much bad about the 95.

Again, any questions let me know - lots of info that I can share about it.

Hey Kubie, there are some things you can try. The throttle bodies may need to be synced. Also the throttle position sensor may need to be recalibrated. But, first I'd check for codes.

I am fairly knowledgable about the sled but never had the need to do anything like that....'triple650indy' could answer that one.

Did you have a chance to run the sled at all today???

DID NOT RUN IT AT ALL TODAY. I DRAINED ALL THE GAS OUT AND REPLACED W/ 92 OCTANE AND REPLACED ALL THREE PLUGS AGAIN AND WILL TRY IT TOMORROW. DID THE 95 HAVE EXTRA 10 OR 12 SUSPENSION? DO YOU KNOW?

The 95 has the Xtra 12 suspension.

Did you replace the plugs with Champion???? Let me know how you made out after you run it.

My bad, my previous comment was meant for frustratedsnowmobileguy. Even with the ECU on these sled they do require some tuning via the throttle bodies. The throttle position sensor can be rotated to change the mixture. Also the throttle bodies have to be synced otherwise one cylinder may recieve more fuel then the others and will constantly foul off plugs in the rich cylinder. But the first thing to do is to check for codes via the LED light just in front of the wiring harness entering the ECU.

As far as EFI vs. carbs which you brought up, when the computer is throwing codes you need to think about how the computer communicates with it's external devices. Sensors are the biggest part and the injectors are the final part. But it is always using an electrical pulse. AKA the computer doesn't see clogged injectors when it throws codes it sees variations in the way that component responds electrically. Either way though you still need the three basic components for the engine to run, fuel, spark, and compression.

My suggestion is to get a Clymers manual if you don't fully understand the EFI system. The manual has a very detailed explanation of the EFI systems used on the RXL and Indy 500 which were the same basically. The manual also includes procedures for syncing the throttle bodies and adjusting the TPS sensor.
