The MY08 FST motors will have a new ECU programming flash on them, that improves cold starting, and tweaks a few other things as well.

The most significant for many will be the 'power pill' mode that allows a higher maximum boost for a few seconds when accelerating. Those that have ridden and tested them, say it is a very noticable power surge. It will then return to the normal maximum that we are already accustomed to. Because it is only in effect for a short period of time, they do not publish dyno results with this feature.

Once again, there are few mechanical changes in the FST motor and/or accessories, so the reflash can be applied to the previous years FST models.

Wonder if it's going to help the small backfires we are hearing. Will the reflash be a free upgrade like the '07 reflash?

I don't KNOW, but I very much expect it to be free. Polaris really want these motors to be accepted, develop a good reputation (from dealers and owners), and the owners to like them.

Many of you have been patient, and shown that you want a long useful life from this sled. I constantly try to stress this with those in power, most understand that and are sympathetic. Corporatewide, there are a lot of goals, and resources are spread thin in some areas.

This is great that there updating and all but I have to wonder who they having tuning it? Theres no reason it should even have a backfire when you lift the throttle. Mine does and its quite anoying and even louder with my exhaust.

Theres a real popular chip tuning company that is very familar with the bosch motronic system. I should probly contact to see how they could help. hummm

I have found that the only time they backfire is right after you give it even the slightest gas. If you are cruising and just let off there is no backfire. If you let off too early and just lightly give it gas to keep rolling a few more feet it will backfire when you let off.

The ''power pill'' update is interesting. Any idea about the duration of the absolute pressure increase..... and the temporary psi increase itself?

Just got my new SnowTech mag and according to them the 08 overboost will be 1 bar for 4 seconds. Good for 150hp. Sounds good.

1 bar is 14.5psi............ this can't be it.

I suspect the momentary added boost will be in the 2.5 to 4 psi range...... which would bring the target absolute boost pressure at around 32-33psi at sea level........... and briefly increase engine output to around 155bhp, of course depending on ignition timing.

Yea I know, they already run at about 1 bar, but those are SnowTech's numbers. Just thought I'd pass them on.

I think it may be a terminology confusion problem.

If you look at our gauge, when it is displaying boost, 1 bar on the display is about 2-3 psi. I think that an engineer or product marketing person might have said those exact words, 'overboost will be 1 bar for 4 seconds' I am sure that Polaris is not adding 14-15 ADDITIONAL PSI (1 bar in metric measurement), to the current maximum boost.

Thought you might be interested in some of the terms used in the marketing materials for the MY08 FST.

The over-run clutch will probably help when a motor starts to catch and then begins to stall out, the starter will continue spinning it over, and not kick-out like they do now.

Yes, and this will help prevent flooded engines in cold temps. Each time it fires and the starter disengages, when you crank again, there is momentarily extra fuel. If the engine can keep cranking while trying to fire, there will be less fuel dumped in and lesser chance for flooding. This is part of the "better starting at below -20f" fix.

Actually the starter is always engaged. There is no kick in or out. The gear the starter drives is on a one way bearing. Simple as that. Don't believe me? Grab the clutch and roll the engine over backwards. You can hear and feel the starter turning. I've also had one apart and gears in my hand. the starter motor simply has teeth cut into the shaft that mesh with the gears at all times. The problem with the '06 recall was that there was no bushing on the gear the starter meshes with. It could move out on the shaft causing it to only contact 1/2 or less of the starter teeth. Also some sleds had the wrong style (1pc or 2pc can't remeber which) gears in them.

Latest news on the MY08 reflash

* MY08 Engine Management program reflash will be put on MY06 and MY07 after EPA approval is received. Service Bulletin for the fall of 2007. Free to all owners.

Here are the major features of the MY08 reflash:

A. Under full throttle, 20% overboost is delivered (14.5 psi boost increases to 17.4 psi, can exceed 29 psi absolute) for up to 4 seconds. It will not do TEMPORARY OVERBOOST again, until throttle is reduced and then rpm drops below 6,500 rpm. Ignition timing is unchanged. This is 0.2 bar or 2.9 psi overboost.

B. Revised cold start fuel calibration.

C. Reduces/Eliminates deceleration pop/backfire.

D. Overheat failsafe: at 230F coolant temp. will go into ignition stutter mode to preserve the coolant left in system. Temperature light will be on, but no diagnostic trouble code will be recorded.

E. At 250F coolant temp. the ECU will shut down the engine.

The latest word coming to me, unofficially, is that the MY08 reflash will be available for installation in 2 to 3 weeks from today. That will put it out towards the end of October 2007. This reflash will be installed on all MY06 and MY07 FST snowmobiles.
