QUOTE(erick @ Jun 2 2008, 02:31 PM) Hey all. I realize this site hasn't grown like I would have hoped for so I would like to ask all of you for some suggestions on improvements that could be made, how we can make it better, etc. If you have any ideas that would promote growth and the sharing of knowledgeable information, please let me know. If there are any issues with the site or reasons you would like to share with me why you don't use the site as frequently as some of the others out there let me know. I plan on making a few changes in time for next season and I want to make sure that I'm on track with everyones expectations. I'm new here but it looks pretty damn good to me. Anybody that has the talent to get a web site up and running is doing all right. If I think of anything I'll let you know, If you get no responses that probably means it's just fine the way it is. Glenn.

Erick, I've been a member for around 7 mths and I think it is a good site. But I think it could be a geat site with a little more time and to get the name out there. I didnt know this site exsisted I was asking polaris questions on TY when I was pointed in this direction from a member of totalyamaha. I think this site will be as good as that one in time . Thanks for this site. Bill Pryjomski proud Polaris files Member

It baffles me why this site can't attract traffic. Arcticchat, dootalk, and totally yamaha all get huge number of posts per day, which is what keeps them interesting and allows them to attract even more people.
I just did a quick comparison of all those sites against this one, and I may have found a hole. All of those other sites cater very heavily to their sponsors and advertisers. They all have an exclusive section of some type for those companies and people to advertise, make special offers and sales to their customers, etc. This site does not have such a section. I would imagine that if you are able to encourage some bigger name advertisers (especially those who focus on Polaris performance products) to visit this site more often, make those sponsors VERY visible to all regular users, encourage them to offers "sales" and special deals to members of this site...
Maybe that would encourage those sponsors to more heavily consider your site for advertising, which would encourage all of them to put a polarisfiles linky on their own sites big and bold, which will attract more users to this site, and it will feed on itself?
I have no idea what your objective is in operating this site...make a profit? Break-even? Are you just a snowmobile-lovers contribution to allowing like-minded people to get get together and chat, even if you take a loss? Whatever it is, I think sponsors and advertisers are largely what really make these sites work. Maybe you are willing and able to contact a whole bunch of sellers/advertisers and offer them free advertising on this site for 6 months? Or less, or more? Just doing something creative along those lines might help.
I'm not a huge fan of trying to "steal" users from other snowmobile forums, but maybe Polarisfiles.com should consider becoming a PAYING advertiser/sponsor on HCS, snowmobile fanatics, and/or Snowest...all of which seem to attract the majority of Polaris owners. Paying those sites would give this site the legitimate right to blitz those others with advertisements. They link your site, and you link their sites as well?
You got any Polarisfiles.com stickers, hats, T-shirts, etc sell or even give away to users? So we can put them on our sleds? Maybe you do and I just didn't notice them advertised anywhere here.
I dunno. I think a large part of dootalk's success is 2-fold. 1. Ski-Doo is the biggest selling sled in the world. 2. Ski-Doo as a corporation is very active in that site. I know you tried at one time to get Polaris to be more active here and it didn't work well, but maybe another/different attempt at trying to get Polaris to play along would go better? Maybe you should just offer Polaris Industries free advertising, and make everyone else pay? And encourage Polaris to offer us special deals on accessories or something? And some "breaking news" info for members only to view, just like Ski-Doo does for Dootalk? Dootalk users ALWAYS know about new products a week before the press releases go out to all the mags. The excitement that opportunity for knowledge generates is addicting...heck, I haven't owned a Doo in my last two sleds, but I STILL visit Dootalk very regularl and maintain my membership there, just to check out their breaking news sections to learn about what's new in that brand.
To directly answer your question as to my usage habits of this site vs. others: I'm a very occasional user/visitor, and I rarely post (heck, this is a 5 month old topic, and I just noticed it. But I'm pretty active on some of those other forums. The reason I'm so much less active here is simply becuase there's hardly anyone to talk to here! When I do post here, I MIGHT get one response 5 days from now. (this post is 5 months old, and I'm only the 6th reply!?!?!) But when I post elsewhere, I'll get 5 responses on one day. It's a chicken and the egg thing. To attract more traffic, the site needs more traffic...
I'd also suggest you put this particular topic as a sticky at the top of every sub-section on this site. 5 months, 6 responses...that's even worse than normal! Obviously even your few regular users haven't noticed this topic yet, and some of them may have better suggestions to offer, if you stuck this topic in many places where it is more likely to be noticed.
Don't know that I gave any answers, and I don't pretend to have them, but that's the end of my brainstorm. Hope it helps a little. I'd love to see this site get more traffic and take off, just like most everyone else. Good luck!

Couple other comments. I went back to the home page briefly and pretended I was a new user finding this site for the first time. I came to the conclusion that new visitors to this site will find it appears to have been flat-out abandoned! http://www.polarisfiles.com/forum/index.ph...mode=snowmobileNewest info on this page is for 2006 snowmobiles. This section should be updated on the very day that Polaris releases it's info every year....with great hoopla and ceremony when excitement is at it's highest http://www.polarisfiles.com/forum/index.ph...ts&mode=atvSurely Polaris built ATVs for more than 2 years? Same comments as above. http://www.polarisfiles.com/forum/index.ph...mp;CODE=leadersThe last time the first administrator (erich) posted was in starting this topic...5 months ago. Silent since then. The other administrator last posted in 2006. I consider myself to be a very occasional user of this site, but it appears I use it more than the administrators... I guess if I were a founder/adminstrator/designer/owner of this site, and I was trying to get it to be successful and attract increased traffic, I'd be chatting on it, working on it, improving it every single day until I just gave up and shut it down, even if I was just talking to myself. Very sorry if this sounded a little harsh...this is intended to be constructive criticism, not a bash...so please don't take it the wrong way. I genuinely would like this site to take off. But it clearly needs some updates, and I'd encourage them to be completed before any of my suggestions in the above posts are implemented. I'd bet new advertisers won't be too impressed with some of the out-of-date info they find when they check out this site to decide if they want to advertise on it or not.

I think under the sled specs, you should allow users to make a review on the machine, and have them come through you, then you approve them, and it goes at the bottom under the specs.

I am only a few days old here but I just missed typed a file I was looking for in my computer in the wrong window and this was in the search page list.. .... nice site dont give up.... cant make cookies in 2 minutes, trees take along time until they decay and turn in to mud.
ok How about some down loadable links to add to facebook pages and my space.. I have a home page and would like to post one there also.... members can spread the word how about some cool designs on and logos give me something to catch other Polaris owners eyes and I will turn it into a sticker (windshield, rear window, bumper, even my atv, helmet, tool box, trailer...ect....)

Hey everyone. Thanks for the words of encouragement. I think I'll be dumping this forum software this summer in favor of my own codebase which I've programmed from the ground up.. It will bring us many more features and make it easier for me to manage (as I have it running across multiple sites right now). It is the same software I use at http://www.snowmobilefanatics.comIf I did this, all user accounts would be transferred, all topics, posts, pictures, possibly even PM's. I will notify everyone before any drastic changes are made but if there are no huge uproars about doing this, it's probably going to happen sometime this summer.

Personally, I miss all of the old brochures on sleds from the 60's to the 90's, back when it was P-Man. That was great reference material. Dave
